How i became a critical thinker

Rina Pancham
I have realized that i'm very much a critical thinker. When I was a student I always imagined to sit in a classroom that was nicely painted, and with good aircondition. Because it's most of the time hot in Suriname. When I was at my observing period at school we had to give some lessons and most of the classroom where so dirty that I was always nagging about it. I don't like it when my working place is dirty, even at home when my children make things dirty I get angry at them, especially when I've cleaned everything.I have painted my classroom in the colours green and yellow myself on a saterday. Why? Because I find yellow like an eye catcher colour. If I hang something there on the wall, the  students won't miss to see it . And another wall at front I have painted green. Why green? Because I find green peacefully. I know that white is the colour for peace but I wanted to give my classroom different colours and I find green peacefully.  I have teached for several years by now and every year I get students who are less motivated to study. I had a discussion with my colleague's about how to motivate the students. I came up with I will paint my classroom in 2 different colours and I will put on every table a table coth for them. Maybe if they come into a nice classroom it will motivate them. When I had painted my classroom I had sticht for all the studenst table a table coth all by myself, than I had suddenly the school inspector on visit. He wasn't pleased by my actions that I have painted the classroom. I had said to the inspector I am bored of coming everyday at work and teach in a classroom where the colour of the paint changed from white into a yellowish-white colour. I asked him what he prefers a motivated teacher and motivated students or a teacher that comes and does her work and doesn't care about her students results. He said I could have asked him or another authority before taking action. Well I was not pleased I told him I have taken a step towards my students to motivate them and he should be giving me a compliment and not breaking me down by taking away my inspiration and motivation.I love all my students and I always search for a way to hold them on track to become something usefull and help to build our country. I'm not just a teacher 'I LOVE MY JOB' and I do it with all my heart. I know that all children are not the same but I try to make a part of the school a safe place for them. Only when children get the feeling that the teacher cares for them or never ignore them, than only they will be able to tell you and believe in you and themselves .One of my students was very aggressive and always teasing the other students , he was a handful. But after my all paint work and setting my classroom together his attitude changed. He is now one off my best students and he also keeps an eye for me if no one is writing or scratching something on my painted wall.So yes me changing the colour of my classroom brought some motivation for me and also for my students. They love the classroom so much now that even on our break they want to hang in the classroom and don't want that students of other grades come into the classroom.Being a teacher should not only be teaching but also be a role model for youre students!!
